Mamaearth was established in 2016 after the founders struggled to find toxin-free products for their infant son in India. Initially, the company launched with just six products, primarily focused on baby care, including lotions, hair oils, and shampoos.
By 2019, the brand expanded its portfolio to include skincare and hair care products for men and women, leveraging a Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) model. In late 2021, Mamaearth reached “unicorn” status after a $52 million funding round led by Sequoia Capital, valuing the company at $1.2 billion.
In November 2023, Honasa Consumer Limited launched its Initial Public Offering (IPO). Despite initial skepticism regarding high valuations and marketing spends, the IPO was oversubscribed and the company successfully listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
Mamaearth follows an “asset-light” model, outsourcing manufacturing while maintaining strict control over research, development, and marketing. Their strategy is built on three main pillars:
Toxin-Free Ingredients: Products are marketed as being free of parabens, sulfates, mineral oils, and synthetic fragrances.
Influencer Marketing: The brand was an early adopter of large-scale social media influencer campaigns, partnering with thousands of micro and macro-influencers to build trust.
