Koo In-hwoi founded LG Corporation in 1947 as Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. The first South Korean company to enter the plastics industry was Lak Hui , meaning “Lucky”; that company is now LG Chem. This was in 1952. In 1958, the corporation founded GoldStar Co. Ltd. (now LG Electronics Inc.) as it grew its plastics business. In 1983, Lucky and GoldStar combined to become Lucky-Goldstar.

The first radio in South Korea was made by GoldStar. While some other domestic products (available only in South Korea) were offered under the Lucky brand, a large number of consumer electronics were sold under the GoldStar brand. Although the Lucky brand was mostly known for its Lucky and Perioe toothpaste, it was also well-known for hygiene items including soaps and HiTi laundry detergents.
