The Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 league that would begin play in 2008, was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in September 2007. The teams for the competition, which included Bangalore and represented 8 different Indian towns, were auctioned off in Mumbai on February 20, 2008. Vijay Mallya spent US$111.6 million to acquire the Bangalore franchise. Only Reliance Industries’ bid of US$111.9 million for the Mumbai Indians was higher than this for a team.
